Live comedy in virtual reality, explained.
Stand-up comedy in VR is a real room with a real crowd; the room just happens to be rendered. Here is how it works, what you need, and how to get into a show tonight.
What a VR comedy show actually is
A VR comedy show is live stand-up performed inside a shared 3D space, in our case VRChat, where the comic and the audience are all present at the same moment as avatars. The comic hears the laughs through everyone's microphones and adjusts in real time, exactly like a club. The crowd talks to each other at the bar before the show and heckles (occasionally) during it. Nothing is pre-recorded. That live feedback loop is the whole reason it works, and it is what separates VR comedy from a Zoom show or a YouTube special.
Failed To Render has run this format since 2020, first in AltspaceVR and then in VRChat, which makes it the longest-running professional comedy club in virtual reality: more than 1,500 shows, more than 750 professional comedians, and press from The Washington Post to Variety.
Do you need a VR headset?
No. VRChat runs in desktop mode on any reasonably modern gaming PC, so you can be in the crowd with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. You will see the room in 3D, hear everything in spatial audio and be able to talk. A headset makes it better: you turn your head to look around, you feel like you are in a seat, and the laughter comes from the people around you. Quest, Valve Index, Steam Frame and Bigscreen Beyond all work. If you do not own one, do not let that stop you.

How to get into a show
Every Failed To Render show runs inside a VRChat group instance, which is a private room that only group members can enter. Join the group at vrc.group/FTR.4662 (it is instant), then open VRChat a few minutes before showtime, find the Failed To Render group on your Groups tab, and join the open instance. The host will be on stage doing crowd work by the time the show starts.
The three weekly shows
All three run at 9:00 PM Central and stream on Kick.
- Tomedy Night, Mondays: the open mic, inside a VR rebuild of San Francisco's Brainwash Cafe. New comics welcome.
- Bomb Voyage!, Wednesdays: the bucket show, in a world built for it, with a panel of judges and a trap door.
- The Anchor Show, Thursdays: the pro show, with touring headliners inside the Failed To Render Club.
Is VR comedy any good?
Comics who have done it say the laughs are louder than a small room, because a hundred people in headsets are each laughing directly into a microphone. It also does something a physical club cannot: a comic in Austin, a heckler in Tokyo and a crowd from six time zones share the same stage in the same second. Etiquette, briefly
Mute when you are not laughing or talking to the comic; laugh out loud when you are. Do not stand on the stage. The bouncers are real people and they will move you. Otherwise it is a comedy club, so behave like you would at one.
