TOMEDY NIGHT
The Monday night open mic of the longest-running comedy club in virtual reality. New comics get stage time, regulars work out new material, and the whole thing happens inside a digital twin of a legendary San Francisco cafe-laundromat.
What Tomedy Night is
Tomedy Night is a live stand-up comedy open mic that runs every Monday at 9:00 PM Central inside VRChat. It is the on-ramp to Failed To Render: the place new comics do their first five minutes in front of an audience, and where working comics test material before it goes on the Thursday pro show. The crowd is real people in real time, laughing out loud through their microphones, which is the thing that makes VR comedy work at all.
The room is a virtual rebuild of Brainwash Cafe, the San Francisco cafe-laundromat where Tony Sparks ran one of the most important open mics in American comedy for close to three decades. We rebuilt it in VR down to the washers, so new comics get to stand on the same kind of stage that launched a generation of Bay Area comedians.
How to get on the mic
Show up before 9 PM Central, join the Failed To Render group in VRChat, and put your name on the list with the host in the room. Sets run around five minutes. You do not need a headset to perform: VRChat runs in desktop mode on any gaming PC, and plenty of our regulars started that way. If you have a Quest, Index, Frame or Beyond you are in the room properly, but it is not required.
How to watch
Every Tomedy Night streams live on Kick, so you can watch from a phone, a laptop or a TV with nothing to install. If you want to be in the crowd, join the group in VRChat and hop into the instance a few minutes before showtime. Doors are the group instance; the green room and the after-show chat are on Discord.
Who it is for
Anyone who has ever thought about trying stand-up and never had a club within driving distance. Anyone who does have a club within driving distance but wants more reps. And anyone who just likes watching comics figure it out in real time. Since 2020 more than 750 comedians have worked our stages, and a lot of them did their first set right here on a Monday.
